Kids in the KItchen: Love Potion

Kids in the KItchen: Love Potion

I teach a class called Hogwarts America at a local co/op, and since I was pretending to be their Potions Professor this week I thought I could give them a special potion recipe to do at home as my Valentine to them.

In our class we did a Potion that illustrated layering liquids with different densities and it was a big hit. But this one is great because it’s actually a layered cocktail! I gave each kid a corked glass bottle ($1 at the craft store) with this recipe {inspired from this one} printed inside. I omitted the mention of liqueur for my students, but included it here.

Take your clean potion bottle and carefully pour in ONE of the following until the bottle is quarter full:

  • Chocolate Syrup
  • Maple Syrup
  • Honey

Next very slowly LAYER Half and Half creamer (or for adults a creamy liqueur like Kahlua or Baileys or Liquirizia) until the bottle is half full.  The layers should be distinct.

Top with this spice mixture:

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon chipotle chile or cayenne pepper

Present the bottle to your valentine.

Invite him/her to drink it mixed on the rocks, straight from the bottle, or add the contents to a blender with ice.

(Adults can add an extra shot of their favorite rum or whiskey, if desired.)

Together, quickly drink your invigorating shot of warmth.
