Basics of Homeschooling High School Workshop 5/1 Milford

Workshop Description:
Is your student fast approaching high school, and you feel overwhelmed by homeschooling now that it “counts”? Do you want to get a handle on what you need to do to homeschool high school? Learn what a Carnegie Unit is, different ways to give credit, how to give credible grades, and what courses are required for traditional graduation in Michigan. Understand how to create thorough and appropriate home-brewed courses and the different resources available for teaching subjects you do not feel comfortable teaching. Become familiar with Michigan’s work permit laws, driver’s education process, and other non-academic skills your student will need to learn to become a functioning member of society. Set your student on a path to meet his future career and educational goals whether that includes work, trade school, community college, or four-year college! Participants will leave with a basic high school plan and a free download of the eBook Homeschooling High School: Reverse Engineering for Success by Kathryn Tyler. Who would benefit from this workshop: New homeschoolers of middle and high school students and veteran homeschoolers who are wondering if they should continue to homeschool through high school.

Workshop has a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 15.

Note: This workshop is designed as a parent workshop. While students are still welcome to attend, they have limited seating and all attending students must purchase admission. Presenters’ Biographies:

Heidi Pair has been a homeschooling mom for fourteen years and graduated her oldest in 2015. Her homeschool graduate received scholarships and grants with acceptances from seven colleges, including in-state public, out-of-state public, and private liberal arts schools. She is currently homeschooling her youngest through high school. Heidi co-founded a local homeschooling support group, SHARE, and continues to serve on its leadership board. She has worked as a product reviewer, blogger, and columnist for various organizations, including The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, Homeschool Mosaics, Eclectic Homeschool Online, and Propeller. She owned Pear Educational Products until 2014. Since then she has been focused on the final years of high school and the college application process for her two teens. She is currently working on two e-books, The Homeschooler’s Guide to Early College and Dual Enrollment and The Homeschooler’s Guide to the Common App. Heidi has a B.S. degree in Engineering Arts from Michigan State University and worked in the automotive industry and as a skydiving instructor prior to homeschooling.

Kathryn Tyler Weeks has been a freelance writer since 1993 and a homeschooling mom since 2002. Her oldest child was home educated K-12th and received acceptances and scholarship offers from five colleges, including one in-state public school and four private schools. Her youngest has been homeschooled K-10th grade and will graduate in 2018. She co-founded a local homeschooling support group, SHARE, which boasts a membership of 75 families, and continues to serve on its leadership board. Kathryn has written the eBook, Convince Your Husband to Homeschool and co-authored the book Guerrilla Saving with Jay Conrad Levinson (Wiley and Sons; 2000). Kathryn has written regularly for HRMagazine for 20 years as well as for Home Education Magazine, Woman’s Day, FamilyFun, and others. She has taught composition at the University of California, San Diego; San Diego State University; Oakland Community College; and to homeschoolers. Kathryn received her B.A. in English-American Literature from the UCSD in 1992 and graduated with a M.A. in American Literature from SDSU in 1994.
